What a cleaning includes

• Every foot of gutter cleared by hand into a bucket — no blowing leaves into the beds or onto the neighbor’s driveway
• Downspouts flushed with a hose and checked for flow at the bottom
• Underground drain lines flushed where the downspouts drop into one, with a note if the line won’t take water
• Debris bagged and taken away
• A ladder check of corners, hangers and fascia, with photos of anything that needs attention
• Splash blocks and extensions reset

The flush matters more than the scoop. A downspout plugged with maple seeds and a tennis ball backs up a clean gutter, and in the older neighborhoods the underground drain it feeds is 80 to 100 years old. About a third of the ones we test in Clifton and Northside are partly blocked with roots or silt, and a blocked drain sends every downspout’s water straight to the basement wall.

When to clean gutters in Cincinnati

Late November or early December, after the maples and most of the oaks have dropped and before the ground freezes. This is the one that matters: whatever is in the gutter on December 15 is what freezes into a bar and stays there until March. Late April or May, after oak tassels and maple helicopters, before the summer thunderstorms. Pricing

Cleaning is priced by the house, not the hour. Single-story homes run $120–$200, two-story $180–$300, and large or steep homes, or ones with a box gutter to clear, are quoted after we see them. If we find a repair while we’re up there, the cleaning fee comes off the repair price. No charge for the inspection photos, and no upsell; if the gutters are fine, we say so.

Cleaning that turns into a repair

About one in four cleanings turns up something. In order of how often: a downspout elbow that split in last winter’s freeze, a corner weeping on the south side where the sun works the sealant, spike hangers backed out on a long north-side run, and soft fascia under a corner that overflowed for years. Box gutters

Box gutters clean differently. There’s no lip to hook a bucket on, the trough is wide, and what’s sitting in it is often the leaf mat that has been rotting the liner. We clear it, flush the outlets, and look hard at the liner while we’re in there — a cleaning is the cheapest way to find out whether a box gutter has another winter in it.

What a cleaning won’t fix

A clean gutter that still overflows is undersized or pitched wrong; we’ll tell you which, but the cleaning doesn’t change it. And a clean gutter under the pin oaks on Observatory Avenue will be full again by Christmas. If we’re cleaning the same house twice a year and the trees aren’t going anywhere, we’ll bring up gutter guards, because the arithmetic starts to favor them around year six.

Doing it yourself

A single-story ranch, a good ladder, a helper holding it, gloves and a bucket: go ahead, and flush every downspout from the top when you’re done. Stop if the ladder has to lean on the gutter (it crushes it), if you’re reaching more than an arm’s length, if it’s a two-story roofline, or if the downhill side of a hillside lot puts the ladder foot on a slope.
